C4
Wind Quartet / 2024 / 8'
1. cell (for clarinet in B flat)
2. contrary lighting (for flute and bassoon)
3. crunch (for flute, oboe and clarinet in B flat)
4. chorale (for wind quartet)
C4 explores various compositional techniques, centered around the use of harmony.
cell explores the use of contrasting gestures and characters and the resulting musical tension from unpredictability, all born from one musical cell.
contrary lighting focuses on bi-modality. As the two instruments diverge in “brightness” of the mode they play in, so do their characters.
crunch explores the creation of intervallic and rhythmic crunch, progressing from calm consonance to chaotic dissonance.
chorale explores different ways of harmonising a diatonic melody, using equidistant intervals, chromatic planing, inversions and pedal point.
